TOURISM
The Friuli region is full of noble history- Byzantine, Venetian, Roman and Hapsburg.
At the same time, it is geographically and culturally complex and as such has
much to offer the tourist. Past and present combine to produce a distinctly central
European flavour with Friuli acting as a melting pot of Latin, German and Slavic
cultures.
Villa Scala is also conveniently situated for trips to
the beaches of Lignano Sabbiardo and Grado as well as the mountains
of Carso, Carnia and the Dolomites. The town of Aquilea is a
real gem. In Roman times it was the crossroads of the rivers
Annia and Postumia and the most important port in the Adriatic.
Vestiges
of the Roman Forum can still be seen and admired today as can
Theodore’s Basilica, with its superb mosaic pavement.
Towns
particularly worth visiting include Udine, Gorizia, Cividale
Longobarda as well as Trieste, which served as the southern port
of the Hapsburg empire.
The hilly Collio region with its ancient vineyards is best known for its production
of famous wines such as Tocai, Sauvignon, Merlot Cabernet, Refosco and Picolit
.
